The Epic Caper

Architecture of a Caper

von oakie

This story, like so many, begins with an unlikely encounter. Terming the encounter "unlikely", of course, is one of those cognitive illusions, that our pattern-matching brains creates for us. After all, most encounters are as likely as the next and perhaps it is only the unlikelihood of what followed that would make the encounter seem unlikely. Or perhaps there simply isn't a better term for what happened at the beginning of this particular tale. All that is known is, that one fateful day Frankie and June encountered, so to speak, with disastrous consequences.

Frankie had worked as a Chemical Engineer at a local science park for nearly a decade. A negative disposition of character had made his working life miserable, doubly so. For one, he was negative, which tends to make one de-facto miserable.

Secondly, part of his job was to drive the development of some rather unnecessary albeit aggressively marketed pharmaceutical products. Unfortunately, Frankie's negativity was not of the unscrupulous kind. As a consequence, his work didn't profit from the meticulous negativity that would actually serve as an asset in a more productive line of research. Thus, most of his attempts to further the advancement of mind-altering, addiction-inducing little blue pills failed miserably. So much for Frankie.

As for June's career before their chance encounter, the most one could say about it is that it didn't exist. She represented a kind of modern nomad, without the luxury of owning a tent or the means of transportation. Instead, she had developed, since the age of negative nine months, a real knack for getting what she wanted. This never actually worked to her advantage, since most of the time she didn't exactly know, what in fact, she really did want. And when she did, the object of her desire only retained its dubious title so long as she didn't own it.

Thus was born the idea of the caper, that was to change both their destinies.
